Brides Guide to Wedding Photography

What Makes a Good Wedding Photography Contract?

A good wedding photography contract, like any other contract, should protect both parties' interests. Ideally, both parties would be happy to sign the contract, instead of one person feeling they're being taken advantage of.

I've made a list of what you should look for in your contract. Please note, this list doesn't constitute legal advice :-) If you have any doubts about your contract you should consult a legal professional.

Your Wedding Photography Contract Should Include...

  1. The total cost of your wedding photography and payment terms - e.g. the retainer fee and final payment, and when they're due. Or details of monthly payments.

  2. Details of everything that's included in your photography package - type and size of album, number of photos and pages, any additional products liked framed prints or DVD slideshows.

  3. The number of hours of photographic coverage at your wedding and the cost of extra hours - and how extra time will be charged and paid for.

  4. The cost of extra photos in your album or as separate prints - and how long those prices will remain unchanged.

  5. What happens if your photographer fails to attend your wedding - is there a plan B?

  6. What happens in the event of equipment failure?

  7. Details of the copyright and ownership of your wedding photos - you'll need a letter of permission to print if you're getting copyright-free photos.

  8. The photographer's use of your wedding photos for publicity purposes.

  9. How you will first view your photos - proof album, online gallery, etc. and any conditions that may apply.

  10. What happens in the event of wedding cancellation?

As I mentioned earlier, this contract should be for the photographer's benefit as well as your own. He has a business to run with expenses and overheads, so it's vital he has something to fall back on in case of any problems.
