Reportage Wedding Photography
Reportage wedding photography, also known as wedding photojournalism or documentary wedding photography, is for people that want the emotion and feeling of their wedding day captured on camera. In a non-obtrusive way the photographer photographs the day as it unfolds, with minimal intervention. He always has to be in the right place at the right time, so he doesn't miss any of the key events. So you have to be happy with a photographer following you around for most of the day, otherwise there may be a problem! If you could cope with that and be able to ignore the photographer (which is what he wants!), you should end up with wonderfully natural photos. If you don't like the idea of a fly-on-the-wall approach, you should have a look at some of the other wedding photography styles. The biggest challenge in reportage wedding photography is recording the little events - all things that go largely unnoticed but really show the magic of the day.
Photojournalism requires a certain type of person, which happens to suit me down to the ground. I'm fairly quiet and unnoticeable, which allows me to observe what's going on without drawing much attention to myself. This is the key getting the most natural and spontaneous shots. If a photographer is the kind of person that's full of energy and knows how to work a crowd, he may be better suited to
contemporary wedding photography.
It doesn't work when people are playing up to camera and/or the photographer. However I'm always happy to include traditional wedding photography, because most people still want at least a few formal group shots even if they do say they don't particularly like them!
As I'm sure you'll know, digital wedding photography allows photographers to easily change colour photos to black and white. Find out how I know when a photo will look stunning black and white!

Here the bridesmaid saw the bride in her dress for the first time. I love the awestruck look on her face!
Reportage shots tend to work really well in black and white - the timeless, nostalgic look compliments captured moments and turns them into something extra special!
