Brides Guide to Wedding Photography

Digital Wedding Photography Explained!

So how does digital wedding photography work? Well, after finding a potential photographer (usually via search engines and judging the quality of websites), you make an appointment to meet the photographer.

Sidenote: Sometimes with the big name wedding photographers people book them through their website without meeting or even speaking to them.

First Meeting

In the past this meeting would have been to judge the quality of the photographer's work, but now you've probably already seen their work online. Because digital wedding photography has become so personal and involved, the first meeting is predominantly to see whether both parties are happy to work together.

It also gives you a chance to talk about the style of wedding photography you like most and look at some albums. If you're happy you should make the booking as soon as possible. Usually a date is only booked once you have paid a deposit, to avoid cancellations.

Second Meeting

As the first meeting might have taken place well in advance of the wedding, it's not uncommon to have another meeting to go through all the details of the wedding day.

Engagement Shoot

These are becoming more and more popular as a way of 'practising' being photographed before your wedding. It can break down any inhibitions of being photographed, as well as allowing your photographer to get an idea of what sort of poses would work best for you.

Hint: make sure you find out if you get any prints included in the package price, because for photographers, engagement shoots are another sales opportunity.

The Big Day

The next time you see your wedding photographer will probably be on the big day. Depending on the package you choose he might be photographing the bridal preparations through to when you leave the reception venue.

Post-Wedding

After the wedding the first thing your photographer should do is make back-up copies of the days' photos.

Then he'll go through the photos sorting out the 'keepers' from the duds and carry out necessary corrections/enhancements.

Seeing Your Photos For The First Time

Digital wedding photography gives you a number of different ways to see your photos for the first time:

  • Printed "proofs" or "originals" - these may be loose prints or in an album and un-removable;
  • Online - you may be given a password to access a private gallery on his website;
  • On disk - the images might be on a CD or DVD for you to view on your computer;
  • Digital proof album - images are printed directly onto the page, so it's like looking through a catalogue.

(When you see your wedding photos for the first time they may have watermarks on them for copyright reasons).

You now choose your favourite photos.

Final Products

Again, depending on what kind of package you choose, your favourite images will now be given to you:

  • In a wedding album;
  • As loose prints to put in your own album;
  • On DVD to do your own printing.
